How and where to sell coins?

If you are in Pretoria, you have some of the best coin buyers in SA right there. Here’s how to do it properly so you get a fair price:

*1. DON’T clean the coins*
This is the biggest mistake. Cleaning scratches them and kills collector value. Keep them as they are, in their boxes, tubes or capsules if you have them. e02b

*2. Figure out what you have*
– *Gold coins* (Krugerrand, Protea, Natura): Value is based on gold content + daily gold price and Rand/Dollar rate. Worth the most.
– *Old silver ZAR / Union / R1 silver 1965-1969 / British silver*: Collectors buy these. Dealers like one in Vanderbijlpark list exactly this: ZAR 1892-1902, Union 1923-1960, Decimal 1961-1965 etc.
– *Normal circulation coins* (1c,2c,5c,10c,20c,50c from 1966-1990 and all coins after 1990, including R1,R2,R5): Generally NOT bought by dealers as collectables.
– *Mandela R5*: Most are worth R5 unless they are the 90th Birthday proof or 2008 uncirculated high grade. 59ec

Take clear photos front and back of each coin.

*3. Get a free valuation first*
In Pretoria / Centurion go to a registered dealer, not a random person on Facebook:

– *The Scoin Shop* – Shop 219, Veale St, Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria, 0181. South Africa’s premier for 45 years, specialists in rare and modern coins. Phone +27 12 346 0676
– *Anchor Coins* – Pretoria, buys gold, silver, platinum coins
– *Muntstuk International Coins* – Centurion
– *SA Gold Coin Exchange (SAGCE) / The Scoin Shop Sandton* – also deals nationally
– *South African Reserve Bank (SARB)* – Head Office in Pretoria. They DO NOT buy old circulation coins, but they do buy Krugerrands, Protea and Natura gold coins from the public. You must bring ID, proof of residence and bank statement. 13c0e88ba1aaa5f3

What a legit dealer does: Weighs each coin and tests with XRF analyser in front of you, price linked to that day’s market, and pays by EFT with a sale agreement. It takes 10-15 mins. Check they are registered second-hand goods dealer + FIC registered. 6bf434e9

*4. Where else you can sell*

– *Online auction*: Bob Shop (formerly Bidorbuy), Junk Mail Collectibles. You set reserve, auction based. Good exposure but you must vet the buyer yourself.
– *The Gold Avenue* in Johannesburg if you have gold coins – they do walk-in, WhatsApp valuation and immediate EFT. fae4e02b

*5. What to bring to sell*
– SA ID / Passport
– Proof of banking for EFT
– Coins as they are, plus any certificates/boxes for proof sets e02b

*Quick tip to avoid scams:*
– Don’t meet in a parking lot, only fixed shop with cameras and security
– Don’t accept cash offers from people saying your 1994 Mandela R5 is worth R1 million – it’s not. The truly valuable one is the *1898 Single 9 Pond* – only one ever made.
– Get 2 quotes. If one is 3x higher than Scoin Shop / SAGCE, it’s likely fake. 34e9e88b

If you want, send me photos of the coins you have (front + back + year) and I can tell you which category they fall into and what to ask for.
