    Safe. Smart. Sustainable. Probably not the first words you typically associate with mining. But Anglo American is not your typical mining company.

    Guided by our purpose and our values, we enable both high performance and purposeful action as we aim to “re-imagine mining to improve people’s lives”, delivering the metals and minerals that make modern life possible – from mobile phones to medicines.

    Safety first is a way of life for us.  We are unconditional about the safety, health and well-being of our colleagues, at work and at home, and about that of the communities where we work. We aim to lead the industry by investing in innovation to protect people, who are at the heart of our business. Our high performing teams take accountability for their own and others’ actions, work collaboratively, and always show care and respect.

    Job Description:

    Group Discovery and Geosciences (GDG) is a competitive differentiator for Anglo American. GDG’s vision is transforming Anglo American by discovering and unlocking value from Resources, contributing towards Anglo American’s Purpose of re-imagining mining to improve people’s lives in two important ways:

    • Creation of transformative value through the safe and effective discovery of two or more superior-value mineral deposits every decade; and
    • Maximizing value realization from Anglo American’s portfolio of assets by implementing leading operational geoscience effectiveness.

    The Mineral Resource team strategy is to support the GDG vision and Anglo American purpose by:

    • Standardising, centralising, innovating and automating our workflows to improve our bandwidth;
    • Integrating strategy, planning and execution to improve our agility;
    • Developing our talent for the future of work to improve capability;
    • Connecting with our broader stakeholder ecosystem to provide influence.

    The purpose of this role is to execute the MinRes strategy by developing and continuously improving Rapid Resource Modelling workflows for ore control, resource, geometallurgical and endowment models for assets in South Africa.

    Performance & Delivery

    • Assist in the development of implicit 3D geological models of lithology, structure, alteration etc. as inputs into Rapid Resource Modelling workflows.
    • Support the sharing of geological models across geographies through web-enabled applications such as Leapfrog Central, the Spatial Data Portal, and 4D Viewer.
    • Convert models of lithology, structure, alteration etc. (commodity and asset dependent) into domains suitable for estimation of grades (or other attributes) either on a broad scale (for endowment) or in detail, where data permits, for resource estimation (for both long term planning and short term operational models).
    • Develop, maintaining, and continuously improving the geostatistical workflows for Mineral Resource estimates for specified assets in the South Africa.
    • Run pilot studies to test concepts aimed at identifying changes to improve performance related to geological modelling and domaining which are then applied, implemented and maintained at operational level.
    • Manipulate block models (post process) to assist in mine planning processes.
    • Assist drilling teams in optimal drill planning. Monitor data collection, review standards for Quality Assurance and Quality Control of data inputs and model outputs.
    • Ensure the maintenance of standards for Quality Assurance and Quality Control of data inputs and model outputs.
    Qualifications
  • Required: An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Geosciences.
  • Desirable: Geosciences. Post graduate qualifications (Masters or Doctorate) in Geostatistics. Appropriate professional membership of recognised professional institute such as SAIMM, AusIMM or equivalent.

Technical Knowledge:

  • A general understanding of geological setting for Platinum deposits in South Africa and for other deposits of bulk materials, base and precious metals and diamonds advantageous.
  • Understanding of data collection methods including sampling, assaying and related QAQC to ensure data inputs to estimation are fit for purpose.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the geological modelling process, with firm grasp on controls on mineralisation for several commodities and geological settings.
  • Good understanding of the application of geological controls on mineralisation to resource estimation i.e. ensuring geological domains used in estimation have sound geological and statistical basis.
  • Solid understanding of the theory and practical aspects behind the development of mineral resource estimates.
  • Understanding of more advanced geostatistical algorithms such as conditional simulation.
  • Understanding of geometallurgical characteristics of rocks and application/use in spatial estimation.
  • Sound understanding of ore control practices in open pit operations and reconciliation processes.
  • Understanding of primary mining and processing methods within the business (e.g. flotation and leaching processes). This enables the delivery of resource estimates that maximise value in the given mining/processing configuration.
  • In depth knowledge of the key Resource and Reserve reporting code (JORC) and working knowledge others (SAMREC and NI 43-101).
