The South African Avocado Growers’ Association Bursary

 

The South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA) is a member of the South African Subtropical Growers’ Association (Subtrop). SAAGA offers bursaries to university students to enable them to gain knowledge and an understanding, through training, to enter the avocado industry in South Africa.

The SAAGA bursary is offered to students for studies towards a BSc (Agric) or equivalent degrees majoring in Horticultural Science or Agricultural Economics / Agribusiness.

The bursary is specifically aimed at previously disadvantaged students.

About the Subtrop SAAGA Bursary

As described above, SAAGA is an association of Subtrop. Subtrop manages the South African Avocado Association (SAAGA), the South African Litchi Growers Association (SALGA), and the South African Mango Growers’ Association (SAMGA).

The students who are awarded the bursary will be required to work for Subtrop for each year that the bursary is awarded. SAAGA will assist the student in finding a position within the company.

Students must, wherever possible, focus their seminars and projects that they take part in on the avocado industry. If there is no position available, there is no obligation on the student to repay the bursary funds.

The SAAGA bursary is for students of colour studying towards a BSc (Agric) or equivalent degree majoring in Horticultural Science and related fields, or Agricultural Economics.

Requirements

Students who are awarded the bursary are required to fulfill the obligations outlined by Subtrop. They must want to pursue their career in the industry and/or its value chain.

It is important to note that if the recipient does not pass the course, SAAGA will discontinue the bursary and the student will have to pay back the bursary over a set amount of time.

The coverage of the bursary differs from student to student and will be discussed with each successful applicant, these will be reviewed annually by a panel. They are relooked at each year of the bursary.
