The Jack Simons Bursary – UCT Centre for African Studies Programme is primarily aimed at financially needy Black African students who boast a strong academic record.
This is to ensure equal representation in the Postgraduate Student Body at the University of Cape Town (UCT). As a branch of the Humanities Faculty at the University of Cape Town, the Centre for African Studies aims to redress the under-representation through the use of the Jack Simons Bursary.
The Jack Simons Bursary Programme provides financial assistance to mainly Black African students studying a Postgraduate Degree/Diploma in African Studies. The Jack Simons Bursary Programme will provide beneficiaries with financial cover to the value of R20 000.
The Harry Oppenheimer Institute (HOI) established the Jack Simons Bursary Programme. Jack Simons was a lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in the 1930s. He became a renowned critic of Apartheid and was an active member of the South African Communist Party (SACP). Jack Simons went into exile following the South African Communist Party’s banning and received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in the 1990s.
Closing Date of the Bursary
Please note that bursary applications for the Jack Simons Bursary Programme will close on the 12 of April 2021. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered for the Jack Simons Bursary Programme.

About the Bursary
The Jack Simons Bursary Programme is primarily aimed at financially needy Black African students who boast a strong academic record. Jack Simons Bursary Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
Prospective applicants need to satisfy all of the requirements of the Jack Simons Bursary in order to be considered for the Programme:
Applications are open to South African citizens or students with a valid South African permanent residency permit.
Applications are open to students who have successfully obtained their National Senior Certificate (NSC).
Applications are open to students studying a Postgraduate Degree/Diploma in African studies.
Applications are open to registered students at the University of Cape Town (UCT) ONLY.
Applications are open to students who are in need of financial assistance.
Applications are open to students studying on a full-time basis.
Failure to comply with the requirements for the jack Simons Bursary Programme will result in a rejected application.
Bursary Coverage
The Jack Simons Bursary Programme will provide successful applicants with financial assistance to the value of R20 000. This will help pay for the costs of the relevant Postgraduate African Studies Degree/Diploma.
Please note that students are provided with an opportunity to defer the Jack Simons Bursary for a period that does not exceed 1 year.
How to apply for the Jack Simons Bursary?
Kindly note that students applying for the Jack Simons Bursary Programme should download and complete the application form found at – Jack Simons Bursary Programme Application Form
Once completed the application form should be emailed to uyelwa.mnqanqeni@uct.ac.za. Students should indicate their full name and the name of the Bursary in the email subject line.
The following supporting documentation should be attached to the applicant’s email:
The applicant should attach a certified copy of their ID certificate.
The applicant should provide a recently updated and certified CV.
The applicant should provide copies of their published works (if any).
The applicant should request a ‘referee’s report’ from two people who are familiar with his/her work.
The applicant should indicate if they have been a beneficiary of any other Bursary Programme.
Failure to adhere to the application requirements will result in the application being disregarded.
